“The Teacher as ‘First Responder’: Resources that School Psychologists Can Use to Build the Classroom Intervention Toolkit”
The Kansas Association of School Psychologists is pleased to bring Dr. Jim Wright of Intervention Central to Emporia for a one day workshop. The workshop will provide school psychologists, teachers, administrators, and support staff with necessary tools to serve as academic intervention ‘first responders’.
Students who struggle academically often require individualized interventions carefully tailored to their areas of academic deficit. This workshop provides school psychologists, general- and special-education teachers, administrators, and support staff with the necessary tools that classroom teachers need to serve as academic intervention ‘first responders’. The training covers these topics:
At-Risk Learners: The Profile. The workshop opens with an overview of struggling learners, with particular attention to poor motivation and ‘learned helplessness’ and their negative classroom impact.
Strong Core Instruction. Participants review the effective elements of direct instruction that every teacher should incorporate into large-group lessons.
Academic Interventions. A range of research-based intervention strategies are demonstrated for reading, writing, math, and general ‘academic survival’ skills. Teachers can use these intervention ideas immediately to support at-risk learners.
Progress Monitoring. No academic intervention counts unless the student’s progress is being monitored. This training segment presents teacher-friendly data-collection tools such as checklists, rubrics, behavior report cards, and more--showing how each can be used to track student growth.
As an additional training benefit, participants will have access to a webpage containing links to all resources presented at the training, including downloadable scripts for all academic interventions discussed.
Workshop Outcomes
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:
-
be knowledgeable of ‘foundation’ academic components that should be routinely incorporated into core instruction for struggling learners
-
know specific intervention ideas tools for common student academic concerns.
-
be able to identify simple progress-monitoring methods that can track academic-intervention outcomes in ‘real time’.
-
have free access to Internet resources that can serve as a starter set in assembling a teacher intervention toolkit.
