Dear KASP Members, As the 2023-2024 school year comes to a close, the KASP Executive Board is gearing up for our annual Summer Board Retreat and additional advocacy training. Below is a brief highlight of current board initiatives aligned with our strategic plan. If you are interested in supporting these initiatives, want more information, or want more information about joining the executive board, please do not hesitate to reach out. Along with support from NASP, we have been reviewing requirements for joining the Interstate Compact. At this time, due to KSDE licensing standards related to the Initial School Psychology license, Kansas is not eligible to join the Interstate Compact. We will continue exploring options or opportunities for aligning standards with NASP and the Interstate Compact; however, these processes must consider all stakeholders that could be impacted. If you are interested in learning more about the Interstate Compact, please visit the NASP or National Center for Interstate Compact websites. Two board members will attend the NASP Public Policy Institute to continue supporting the KASP executive board’s development of advocacy skills. Additionally, I will represent KASP at the NASP Legislative Summit. The executive board members attending these events in Washington, D.C. over the summer, will have an opportunity to pass along the advocacy skills and strategies to the KASP executive board members during our Summer Retreat. The executive board is also beginning to explore the development of two potential subcommittees. One subcommittee, proposed by KASP members, would connect members with similar interests for peer consultation and resource sharing. A second subcommittee, proposed by executive board members, would connect members with support in applying ethical problem-solving in alignment with the NASP Ethical Code. These subcommittees may provide an opportunity for members to get involved without committing to an executive board position. If you have any interest in serving on a subcommittee or learning more, please reach out to me or another board member. Finally, we are excited to be working on details for the Fall 2024 Convention, Power and Purpose: Building Collaborative Strength. In addition to our full-day workshop featuring Dr. Ross Greene, we hope to provide an exciting array of breakouts related to direct and indirect social/emotional/behavioral services and support, consultation and collaboration, and practices promoting safe and supportive schools. Congratulations on closing out another school year serving Kansas students, families, and communities. In the coming summer months, make sure to prioritize yourself and the things that bring you joy. Warm Regards, Amy Drinnon, Ed.S. KASP President |
Board Minute Summary by Angie Howard, Secretary The KASP Executive Board convened via Zoom on April 9, 2024. The meeting began at 6:30 p.m. with review and approval of minutes from the previous meeting and a review of previous action items to determine progress and next steps. The board finalized the remaining details for the Spring 2024 Convention and discussed details and tasks related to preparation for the Fall 2024 KASP Convention, Power and Purpose: Building Collaborative Strength. Members of the board then turned their focus to a request for and planning related to a collaborative professional development offering with Kansas Association of Gifted Talented and Creative (KGTC). Board reports were then provided, beginning with the Treasurer. A motion was made and approved to allow the KASP Treasurer permission to roll over CDs to the best available rate as they mature. The Executive Manager provided an update on promotional banners and plans to digitize historical KASP documents. The KASP GPR representative and members of the board discussed NASP’s Interstate Compact and posed questions for follow up with KSDE and NASP representatives regarding feasibility, benefits, and challenges. The GPR representative discussed the current legislative climate and plans to continue advocating for a focus on appropriate ratios for KS School Psychologists. The board aims to garner a better understanding of what data points might be needed to assist in these efforts. The NASP Delegate shared details regarding the upcoming NASP Public Policy Institute (PPI), and the board discussed attendance of board members at this professional development opportunity. A motion was made and approved to authorize an increase in funding for PPI attendance for the current year based on KASP’s strategic goals to advocacy and policy initiatives. This increase in funding allows support for two KASP board members to attend NASP PPI. Region Representatives discussed possible topics and began planning for a joint regional meeting. The KASP Editor and Associate editor put out a call for information to be shared in upcoming newsletters. KASP Communications Director provided an update on promotion of the organization and events via social media and progress toward promotional items for the KASP Fall 2024 Convention. The Presidential Triumvirate gave updates on initiatives and led discussion related to the strategic plan and steps to continue propelling efforts forward. The Work Authorization Committee Chair provided an update on committee membership and confirmed a new member and committee chair. The KASP President appointed several board members to work toward establishing an ad hoc Ethics Committee following noted interest and perceived potential benefit to membership noted by members of the board. Board members were tasked with addressing established action items for follow-up prior to the scheduled summer board retreat. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. |
KASP's 2024 Virtual Spring Conference was a great success! KSDE Attorney Brian Dempsey spent three hours reviewing formal complaints and case law, and responded to questions submitted by our nearly 200 registrants. As always, the one thing we could use is more time on this topic! The KASP Board will continue working hard to provide opportunities for professional development in law and ethics. Thank you to all who attended!
Don't forget to make your calendars for our 2024 Fall Convention on October 17th and 18th in Lawrence!
Our fall convention will feature Dr. Ross Greene for a full day workshop, Damian Smith as our keynote speaker, time for legal updates, and a variety breakout sessions. If you're interested in applying to present a breakout session, please visit our website for more information and complete the CALL FOR PROPOSALS form.
We look forward to seeing you in Lawrence for two days of amazing professional development! More details to come.
